Welcome to the New Hall of Marathonia!

Salutations, Great Buckaroo Banzai! For those of you who have just stumbled here from the dark, dank corners of the Internet, welcome! This twisted page is the next generation of the Hall of Marathonia. This page chronicles the ongoing tradition of Film and Cinema Marathons held throughout the year in Columbus, OH.

If you're viewing this page from a Handheld device, try the alternate PDA-friendly version, MarathoniaPDA.html.

The Marathons have been a tradition of good/bad movies, good/bad food, good/bad company and mass dosages of discomfort and sleep deprivation for longer than most care to remember. I first attended this insanity in 1990, the Fourth Science-Fiction Marathon, and attend them as often as I am able.

The Marathons also have an official web presence, which I help to administer, including two web pages, a Facebook page, a Twitter feed, and a discussion Forum.

Please note that I have only included those certificates and tickets on this site which I myself actually earned and own (by merit of attendance at the particular event.) Larger, more comprehensive scans of the Certificates, Tickets, Flyers, and generally anything else we could find are available in the Archives section of the associated websites. Feel free to stop by there for even more Marathoid goodness.

For further reference, check out the Hall of Marathonia Index Page which lists all the films referenced here in alphabetized order. It's the perfect reference tool for settling bar bets and proving your dominion over other Marathoids.

This site includes information on the films and shorts shown at the Ohio genre film Marathons, with as much personal commentary as my limited cranium can produce. As such, it is to be regarded as exclusively my opinion, and is not intended to represent the official thoughts or opinions of the event organizers. It is subject to change at any time, because the quantum universe we live in is notoriously fickle. Please feel free to write me with any errors you may find, and I'll be glad to correct them.

9:10 AM Looper 2012
11:10 AM Time After Time 1979
Hall of Fame Inductee: Bruce Bartoo
Projection Note: Looper, Bill and Ted's Excellent Adventure

Because of fears that the DCP key would expire before showtime, it was decided to move Bill and Ted's Excellent Adventure forward slightly in the lineup, switching its place with Looper.

Event Note: Bartoo Retirement, Daylight Saving Time

* This otherwise phenomenal marathon had one moderately sad moment. Our esteemed host organism, Mr. Bruce Bartoo, announced that he was officially stepping back from center stage and retiring to "emeritus status" because of health issues. This leaves Joe Neff as the man of the hour and the coordinator of the Marathon Empire for future events. (Though truth be told, I expect Bruce will continue to make regular appearances, if at a reduced capacity.) We salute you, Bruce, welcome to the Hall of Fame!

* Because of Daylight Saving Time and the marathon's planned running time of 24 hours, the final film ended after 1:00. Just as planned.

The universe having designated this the 30th Calendar Anniversary of the very first Ohio Science Fiction Marathon, as well as the 30th consecutive 24-hour Sci-Fi event (not counting SF18.5, Ye Grande Trailerthon), it was decreed that all involved should partake of cake commemorating the festivities. The cake was not a lie. Neither of them were. They were both lovely.

We were once again honored to have the Producer of Jodorowsky's Dune, Stephen Scarlata, on hand for the one-two punch of it and David Lynch's Dune. This makes Stephen one of an elite few people to have been guests of the Ohio Marathons on multiple occasions. We welcome him back any time.

Event Note: Night of Something Strange, Beyond the Gates, Vampyr

* Jonathan Straiton, although unable to attend, was kind enough to record and introduction for the Ohio Premiere of Night of Something Strange.

* We were very pleased to have the Producer of Beyond the Gates, Stephen Scarlata, on hand for the Ohio Premiere of his film. He offered up a great Q&A session and joined us for a large portion of the event. He's scheduled to return for Sci-Fi 2017 to bring his nigh-unbelievable documentary Jodorowsky's Dune.

* Musical accompaniment for Vampyr was provided by the lovely and ever-talented Sue Harshe.

Mike Olenick was on hand to provide an in-depth Q and A for the premiere of his short-and-oh-so-surreal film Red Luck. He even went so far as to bring the maniacal spandex-clad personage of Red (and the fundamental evil that is aluminum foil) into the costume contest.

As an inverted-introduction to the Kevin S. O'Brien "Bread" films, all six of these trailers were shown upside-down-and-backward.

Projection Note: 35mm Restoration

Special thanks goes to CAPA and the Drexel management who graciously enabled the restoration of the 35mm platter system in the Drexel's main house. Further thanks go to Bruce for putting on a benefit Trailerthon to help defer the costs. The resulting flexibility provided opportunities to show several prints unavailable on DCP and should serve the Sci-Fi Marathon well come March.

10:10 AM Dr. Strangelove or: How I Learned to Stop Worrying and Love the Bomb 1964
General Note: La Nave de los Monstuos

Billed as the "Sci-Fi Surprise Feature", Ship of Monsters was provided to the audience with no English subtitle track. Instead, Bruce (The Host Organism) provided an impromptu "translation" of the film revealing the film's disturbingly strange associations with the event. Who could have known that the film was actually about aliens trying to make their way to the Columbus marathon?

Hall of Fame Inductee: 35mm Film
Projection Note: 35mm Availability

The Drexel theater has since moved to a DCP-only setup (Digital Cinema Projection), so the only formats they were able to show were DCP and BluRay DVD.

In an incredibly welcome surprise, Eric Hayden, the esteemed directory of The Last Push was screening the film at the Neil Armstrong Air and Space Museum in Wapakoneta, OH, and decided to drive on by and visit the marathon gang! Well remembered and well received, his visit was an excellent topper to an already excellent event. We hope to catch him again at either marathon, OR BOTH!

Special Guest: Eric Hayden
Hall of Fame Inductee: Sigourney Weaver
Retrograde Projection: 2012 (Trailer), Battlefield Earth (Trailer)
Event Note: War of the Satellites, The Last Push

Since War of the Satellites had really only been slotted in as a last minute replacement for The Creeping Unknown, when it became readily apparent that we were a full two hours behind, it was dropped from the schedule in favor of a reasonable exit time.

Our hosts were able to get the esteemed directory of The Last Push, Eric Hayden, on the phone for a wonderful late-night interview. He was as enthusiastic and responsive to the audience as the audience was to his film, and both seemed resoundingly happy that the premiere went so well. We hope that in future he'll be able to visit us in person and bring along his next big picture project!

Special Guest: Sue Harshe
Hall of Fame Inductee: John Carpenter
Retrograde Projection: The Hitcher (2007 Trailer)
Projection Note: Bride of Frankenstein, Slither

Due to a shipping mishap, the 35mm prints of Bride of Frankenstein and Slither never successfully arrived at the theater. As a result, Bride of Frankenstein had to be shown on BluRay DVD. Since the marathon was already well behind schedule by the wee hours, Slither was once again chosen as the sacrifice to appease the projection gods. Some films are destined, it seems, to become the stuff of legends.

Event Note: The Cabinet of Dr. Caligari

Sue Harshe did a fantastic job composing and performing live musical accompaniment for the silent classic, "The Cabinet of Dr. Caligari"

Hall of Fame Inductee: Buckaroo Banzai
Retrograde Projection: War of the Worlds (2005) Trailer
Event Note:

Despite intense preparations and extensive theological calculations and warnings, The Rapture (which had been inconveniently scheduled during the presentation of Cargo) does not appear to have called away any of the faithful who might have been present in the audience. As no refund forms signed by God were submitted, no pro-rated refunds were issued during the event.

Since the 1910 Edison Frankenstein was a silent film, the soundtrack from last year's Horror Montage (to which Sue Harshe had previously given musical accompaniment) - cacphonous and yet oddly synchronized - was run in parallel instead.

Special Guest: Mike Olenick (Spaceboy [2009])
Hall of Fame Inductee: Ro-Man
Retrograde Projection: Avatar (Trailer)
Event Note:

Mike Olenick was on hand to give us a bit of insight into his remake of Spaceboy. He had much to say about his investigations into the history of the surrealist gem and his interactions with the Renate Druks estate. Though Spaceboy has a decidedly mixed following among Marathon regulars, we applaude his devotion to this obscure piece and look forward to his next masterwork.

9:00 AM Q: The Winged Serpent 1982
10:40 AM The Thing 1982
Special Guests: Stuart Gordon (From Beyond), Sue Harshe
Hall of Fame Inductee: Bread
Retrograde Projection: The Black Cat (Reel 1)

Unfortunately, this time-told Marathon tradition was fully unintentional this year. As luck would have it, the only unmarked reel for The Black Cat also happened to the reel which was loaded tails-up instead of heads-up. Luckily, the problem was easy to solve, though it did cause additional delays.

Projection Note: Masters of Horror, Q

In all fairness to Dave Nedrow, the dynamo behind projection for the entire 24-hour event, the host of projection problems might have been avoided if he had two more experienced (and less bumbling) assistants with him in the booth. However, between a backward reel on The Black Cat, a missing lens for The Host, and a frantic attempt to build up and break down prints in the final dawn hours before the Marathon, it was determined that Q and the Masters of Horror episode would be the sacrificial lambs to get us all out of the theater at a reasonable hour.

Retrograde Projection: The Day the Earth Stood Still (Trailer)

This year, the upside-down-backward gremlins hit the trailer for the remade The Day the Earth Stood Still starring Keanu ... who? Appropriate given the audience reaction from the year prior when faced with the prospect of the remake.

Projection Note: Eegah (Trailer), Cat Women of the Moon

An enormously sad point from this year's lineup. There was a harsh break in the trailer for Eegah which may foretell its doom. Several of the Marathon favorites are beginning to wear thin, and we all hope they can hold out for a few more years. There is no word as to whether Eegah survived, but we're all hoping for a speedy recovery. Also, the print of Cat Women of the Moon was in horrible shape, what little there was of it. The print had been barely cobbled together from many different sources making the 3-D effect a particularly migraine-inducing experience. So much of the print was missing that it was filled in with a montage of oddities and the last Three Stooges short filmed, Flying Saucer Daffy (1958). Even for a film such as Cat Women of the Moon, it wasn't an improvement.

9:30 AM A Clockwork Orange 1971
Special Guest: Patricia Neal (The Day the Earth Stood Still)
Hall of Fame Inductee: Patricia Neal
Retrograde Projection: Spaceboy

The upside-down-backward presentation of the year was the Marathon "favorite", Spaceboy. What's truly amusing about this choice was the fact that the majority of the audience didn't even notice till after halfway through.

Projection Note: Archival Prints ...

There were a few oddities in an otherwise exceptionally good year for projection. Because the Battlestar Galactica and The Andromeda Strain prints were archival prints on loan for this presentation, they were shown directly from the reels which were provided. This meant a few small breaks while the reels were changed over, and due to a problem getting the second half of Galactica loaded, a small trailer break in-between. Though obviously not ideal, the quality of the prints was so outstanding that the small sacrifice was hardly even noticed.

Event Note: Patricia Neal

This year was a special treat, with the ever lovely and tremendously talented Patricia Neal gracing us with her presence. One of the most beloved and wonderful of guests, she attended despite being down with the flu earlier in the week. She had a gorgeous question and answer session following The Day the Earth Stood Still in which she recalled some of the wonderful memories of her career and her days in the Business called Show. After speaking with us, she was presented the first ever "Gort" award by Bruce and Jeff. She was an instant crowd favorite and we hope that she enjoyed her visit as much as the crowd enjoyed having her.

Unfortunately, Slither ended up being unavailable at the last minute, so was scrapped to make up lost time.

It was intended to show a special interview with Kelli Maroney (of "Chopping Mall" and "Night of the Comet"), but the tape did not arrive in time for the Marathon. The interview is expected to be posted on the website.

Special Guest: Anne Francis (Forbidden Planet)
Hall of Fame Inductee: The Creature From the Black Lagoon
Retrograde Projection: Jason X (Trailer)

Those who had been clamoring to see Jason X at the Marathon may have been surprised this year when the trailer for the movie was this year's candidate for upside-down-backward presentation. Personally, I couldn't think of a better way to show the film.

Event Note: Shorts from the Science Fiction Short Film Festival, Anne Francis

The shorts from the Science Fiction Museum which were shown were: Wireless, Microgravity, Heartbeat, They're Made Out of Meat, Scribble, and Cost of Living. Of all of them, They're Made Out of Meat seemed to get the most agreeable audience response.

Though unable to attend in person, a special recorded interview was shown with the lovely Anne Francis immediately following Forbidden Planet. She was very enthusiastic and spun many a tale of her years in showbiz.

8:45 AM Sky Captain and the World of Tomorrow 2004
11:00 AM First Men in the Moon 1964
General Note: More numbering inconsistencies ...

You will notice that the numbering sequence seems a bit odd here. Apparently the paradoxical nature of time travel has caught up with us. You will remember that instead of the 13th marathon, we were propelled forward to the 17th (see the 17th marathon for more information.) With the advent of Primer, it seems we've slipped backward now to experience the 15th.

Hall of Fame Inductee: Maria (Metropolis)
Retrograde Projection: The Chub-Chubs

This year's Upside-Down-Backward-Presentation? The glorious Marathon favorite, The Chub-Chubs. I have to say, the steadfast presentation of something in this format continues to intrigue me. I suspect the influence of the Illuminati. Still, all-in-all ... as much as I enjoy The Chub-Chubs, watching it scroll through backward is about 100 times more fun.

Retrograde Projection: The Matrix and The Matrix 2 (Trailers) plus Matrix advertisements
Projection Note: He said what, now?

This was an unusually bad year for projection problems. These ranged from a complete lack of heads during the first 20 minutes of The Amazing Transparent Man to a lack of volume on every presentation not shown in 35mm (and some that were.) Most were tolerable, or short, but it was definitely far from ideal.

Special Guest: Kevin McCarthy (Invasion of the Body Snatchers)
General Note: Kevin McCarthy

Kevin McCarthy was unable to attend due to illness, but sent along a videotaped interview and a number of signed photos in his absence. He was most apologetic and we hope to see him at a future event.

Hall of Fame Inductee: Kevin McCarthy
Retrograde Projection: Battlestar Galactica (Trailer)

Intentional or not, what seems to have become a tradition of Marathons-Past resurfaced. True to form, the Battlestar Galactica trailer was shown upside-down-backward. It's an understandable mistake, given the amount of film that needs to be built-up/broken-down for such an event, and it certainly made watching the trailer a much more memorable event. Happy Accidents are what make the Marathons great.

Projection Note: Twilight Zone: the Movie

The Powers That Be decided this year to cut Twilight Zone: the Movie into several different episodes to show throughout the Marathon. Because of time constraints, it was opted not to show the second Twilight Zone segment, Kick the Can, or the fourth Nightmare at 20,000 Feet. Doing so finished the Marathon respectably close to noon, a necessity since the house had a 1:00 PM show going in after us.

Retrograde Projection: Terminator 2 (Reel 4)

In a brilliant move that would galvanize marathon go'ers for generations, the fourth reel of Terminator 2 was shown backward-and-upside-down. As most of the people still awake and watching felt it was a unique improvement on the film, it was continued through to the end.

From the Certificate: Concerning the obvious numbering inconsistency ...

"A long time ago in a theatre not far away [name] did knowingly and willfully submit to strange and inhumane experimentations with an illegally modified W.A.B.A.C. Machine which twisted time and deposited all those who entered in a weird alternate time tangent apart from the popularly acknowledge existenz of "life as we know it" in a bizarre attempt to return to the pre-pharmaceutical grandeur that was the Starship Drexel North and subsequently blasted off in another direction/dimension as far as temporal elasticity could be stretched before snapping us back to the "present day" thus resulting in the four "lost years" and the passengers memories of those thrilling Ohio Science Fiction Marathons 13, 14, 15, and the oh so sweet 16 unfortunately lost in time, floating off in the ether of the might have been."

In Conclusion

I'd like to thank everyone involved in the yearly Marathons - Bruce, Joe, Kevin, Jen, Anna and all the people that work so hard to continue this wonderful tradition year after year. Without their hard work and dedication, we'd all have real lives and be reasonably normal, sane people. Thanks to you all, we're officially a danger to society.

As long as we're thanking the whole entire world, I'd like to thank a guy I know named "Earl."

And, as always gentle reader, I encourage you to seek out independent film and to support the failing livelihood that is the small, single-screen theater. In particular, help keep the coffers filled by frequenting the Grandview and the Drexel Theatres. They'll thank you for your support.
